Molecheck Christchurch is thrilled to welcome Dr Li Ching Tiong to its specialist team. Li Ching brings a wealth of experience and a passion for skin cancer medicine at a time where prevention and early detection are critical.
Dr Tiong graduated from the University of Otago in 2012 and began her career as a surgical doctor before deciding to transition into General Practice. It was during this time that she noticed a common challenge among GPs: skin examinations.
“Many GPs find skin checks difficult, and recognising my own limitations motivated me to actively improve my knowledge and pursue further training in this field,” she explains.
That commitment led her to advanced training in dermoscopy and skin cancer medicine, and ultimately to Molecheck in October 2025.
For Dr Tiong, skin cancer medicine is a unique blend of visual diagnostic skill and practical clinical care. “It’s an area where you can have an immediate and significant impact on someone’s health,” she says.
Her message to New Zealanders is simple: prevention is better than cure. “Sun protection and regular skin checks are essential. Most skin cancers start small and subtle. Catching the changes early makes all the difference.”
Originally from Malaysia, Dr Tiong moved to New Zealand for medical school and has embraced the Kiwi love of the outdoors. Together with her husband, she’s explored some of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes from hiking to Machu Picchu and Everest Base Camp to visiting Bolivia’s salt flats and completing countless hikes across New Zealand. Life looks a little different now for Dr Tiong she is now focused on raising her children but still values “spending time outdoors as a family whenever we can.”
