There are a few things that scream a kiwi summer… Pōhutukawa trees in full bloom, BBQ’s, beach days, and a good game of golf.

This December, we are proud to have sponsored the Auckland Women’s Masters Open Stroke Play Championship at Remuera Golf Club. This event celebrated skill, camaraderie, and the passion of women golfers (aged 40+). It was the perfect summers day, a great sunny backdrop for golf which was a timely reminder of why sun safety matters.

Whilst the focus of these events are precision and performance, there’s another factor every golfer should keep in mind – sun safety.

Extended exposure without protection can lead to sunburn, premature aging, and increased skin cancer risk. It’s easy to underestimate this because the game feels leisurely, but the cumulative effect of UV radiation is significant. Protecting your skin is as essential as choosing the right club.

Five skin cancer prevention tips for golfers

  1. Always apply SPF 50+ half an hour before tee-off and make sure to reapply every two hours.
  1. Wear UPF-rated clothing, long sleeves, pants and wide-brimmed hat offer great protection from the sun.
  1. Choose UV-protective sunglasses to safeguard your eyes.
  1. Seek shade whenever possible, wheter that’s under a tree or umbrella get it in between shots.
  1. Check your skin regularly for new changing spots and book an annual Molecheck appointment. Early diagnosis of skin cancer can be game changing.

As part of our sponsorship, we offer a 23% discount for a full Molecheck to all club members (including all category types) of an Auckland Golf affiliated club. Our doctors use advanced dermoscopy technology to detect and diagnose cancers. If required, they’ll recommend the best treatment options, most of which can be done at Molecheck.

Golf is a game that’s enjoyed by many New Zealanders, make sure you can enjoy it for years to come. Sun safety isn’t about avoiding the outdoors – it’s about embracing it responsibility.

Whether competing at Remuera or practicing at your local course committing to these habits will protect your skin and your future.
